29 Mar Concrete Bases For Garden Buildings

Do I really need a concrete base for my garden building?

This is one of the most popular questions that we get asked by customers who have purchased a wooden garden building and in short, the answer is YES you do need a concrete base for your garden building. 

Whether it’s a summer house, garage, stables, garden office, shed or any other outside garden room, having a concrete base is one of the most important parts of the installation.

Many people are put off of a concrete base because they are more complicated to install, however building on a concrete base comes with the following benefits: 

1. Weight Loading – even a small garden shed can become quite heavy when it’s packed with tools. Building a shed on soft ground or flagstones can cause the building to deteriorate quicker than if built on a concrete base. There is more room for movement which can cause door and window frames to drop out of alignment. 
2. If a building moves, it can cause other parts of the structure to break. Not only is this bad for the building, in wet weather, it will mean that rainwater is more likely to find a way into the building.  

These are common problems that can easily be avoided if you build on a concrete base. 

When building your concrete base, make sure that it’s not too close to the border or another building as you should be able to have full access to maintain your building. A good guide is to leave between 25-35cm access on all sides. 

Make sure that the ground is completely free of debris before starting your base.  The ground needs to be as level as possible. 

The space around your building should be clear of any overhanging trees or bushes. Cut these away before starting! 

Also consider where the sun is. If you are building a garden office, you might what to be in a more shaded part of the garden. If for leisure, you may choose a sunnier spot. 

Other points to consider are electrics and drainage. Do you require an internet connection?
