Sloping Drives

If your house is on a slope, whether it’s at the top of the slope or the bottom of the slope, there will be a few considerations to make when choosing the right surface for your sloping drive.

Sloping driveways can look spectacular. They can really frame a house or a view, however, when it comes to what material to use on your driveway, you will need to be aware of a few different factors.

Firstly, drainage. Water runs downhill. Whatever material you go for, you do not want big puddles of water collecting at the bottom of your slope.  This moves on to our next consideration which is making sure that your property is accessible. A wet sloping surface can be slippery when wet or in cold weather.  A loose surface wouldn’t give great traction and you would lose materials (this rules out gravel and similar).

The surface needs to be tough and durable. It doesn’t need to be put under pressure if you are trying to get the car up it in bad weather.

Gravel is the cheapest material for a drive and can look fantastic providing it has the required drainage and base but it won’t work on a sloping drive.

Asphalt or Tarmac drives also look great but they are not cheap and can require a lot of maintenance. They can be very slippery in icy weather and can easily turn into one massive slide.

Block paving drives look brilliant, but once again, on a sloping drive, they will suffer from the effects of gravity. They will require a huge amount of TLC to keep them looking great and you might find yourself continuously having to replace bricks.
